Below are pictures from the front left sole of two mares who had not been trimmed for four months. A solid hoof under there, but cracks were beginning to form as the hooves started to self trim. Had the horses been willing to stand for much more, I would have been a bit more aggressive. But they had not been touched for some time and were unhappy about the ordeal. Another trim in a couple weeks, and they should be back in great shape.
Below is the front right hoof of a gelding with major cracks from having long toes. Even after two trims there is great improvement and the cracks have begun to grow out with the new hoof rather than gowing up into the healthy, new hoof. Stay tuned - we will add more photos as his new trimming routine continues!
Below is a mare's front left hoof before and after a trim. Her heel was begging to come down as evidenced by her flaky heels and retained sole. Normally this much would not be taken at once but her hooves were ready for it.

Below is a gelding's left front before and after a trim. He's been barefoot for some time but has a lot of retained sole that he's holding on to. Rather than hack away and make him sore, we'll work on his schedule and follow the hoof's lead. He'll be "normal" when he's ready.
